Super Patch vs Kailo: An Honest Comparison (2026)

Two drug-free patches, two published studies — and one detail nobody else mentions.

The short answer

Super Patch and Kailo are both drug-free adhesive patches that claim to reduce pain without delivering any substance through the skin, and both cite a published clinical study. Those studies were run by the same research organisation — Clarity Science LLC — with an overlapping author team, and each was paid for by the company selling the product. The meaningful difference is study design: Super Patch's RESTORE study was randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled (118 adults, Pain and Therapy, 2025), while Kailo's PREVENT study was observational, with no randomization and no placebo control (148 patients, Anesthesia & Pain Research, 2022). A randomized placebo-controlled trial can separate a real effect from a placebo effect; an observational study cannot. Neither product is FDA-approved to treat any condition, neither study has been independently replicated, and results vary between individuals.

The thing nobody else mentions: it's the same lab

Every comparison of these two products I could find treats them as rivals with separate scientific stories. They aren't, quite.

Kailo's PREVENT study lists Jeffrey Gudin, Derek Dietze and Peter Hurwitz as authors. It states plainly that it was “administered by Clarity Science LLC and was funded by Pain Relief Technologies, the distributors of the Kailo Pain Patch.” It appeared in Anesthesia & Pain Research.

Same lead author. Same research organisation. Same journal. Two competing products.

This is not a scandal and I'm not presenting it as one. Contract research organisations serve many clients, and there is nothing improper about a specialist firm running studies for several companies in one category. But it means one thing worth holding onto: “it has a published study” does not separate these two products. Both have one, from the same place. To tell them apart on evidence you have to look at what the studies actually did.

The evidence, honestly

What RESTORE showed

RESTORE was a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 118 adults using the FREEDOM Super Patch over 14 days, published in Pain and Therapy in 2025. It reported a meaningful reduction in pain severity and interference against placebo.

The caveats, which I state every time: it was funded by the manufacturer, authors were compensated in connection with the research, it is a single study, and nobody independent has replicated it. It measured pain over 14 days — not sleep, not energy, not focus, not anxiety. Any claim beyond pain is not supported by this trial.

What PREVENT showed

PREVENT enrolled 148 patients across three US clinical sites and reported reductions in pain severity and interference. It is a real, IRB-approved study and I'm not dismissing it.

But it was observational. Patients were not randomized and there was no placebo patch — everyone knew what they were getting. In a pain study that distinction is close to decisive, because pain is subjective and expectation is powerful, which is the exact thing a placebo control exists to rule out. An observational study can tell you people felt better. It cannot tell you the patch is why.

Where that leaves the comparison

On study design, Super Patch is ahead, and it isn't close — a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial is a materially stronger piece of evidence than an unrandomized observational one. That is the honest evidence edge.

On independence, neither is ahead. Both studies were paid for by the seller and run by the same organisation. Both need replication by someone with nothing at stake. Until that happens, the right posture toward both products is interested, not convinced.

The mechanism question

Kailo's claim is the harder one to accept. A passive, unpowered array of capacitors sitting on the skin has no established route to alter nerve signalling — capacitors store charge, they don't generate it. McGill University's Office for Science and Society published a critical examination of exactly this claim, and people with electronics backgrounds have raised the same objection repeatedly. That doesn't prove the patch does nothing, but the proposed explanation contains a step nobody has demonstrated.

Super Patch's claim is more modest: a physical texture pressing on skin does stimulate mechanoreceptors, and vibrotactile stimulation has an independent research literature behind it. “More plausible” is not “proven,” and those independent studies were run on other devices — they support the idea that the mechanism could matter, not that this product works.

Practical differences that may matter more

Who I'd honestly point where

If you want the strongest available evidence, Super Patch has it — one randomized, placebo-controlled trial, with the funding caveats attached.

If you'd rather buy once than repeatedly, Kailo's reusable format may suit you better, and you should go in knowing its study can't separate the product from placebo.

If you have persistent or worsening pain, neither of these is the answer and I'd rather say so. Get a diagnosis. The interventions with the best evidence for chronic pain remain the unglamorous ones: graded movement and strengthening, sleep, pacing, and treating the underlying cause. A patch of any brand is a small optional layer on top of that, never a substitute for it.
